Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jackson Hole is a valley encompassed by mountains. The valley is 48 miles long and 8 to 15 miles wide, and the valley floor slopes from 6,779 feet above sea level in the north to about 6,069 feet at the southern end.

The Snake River, originating in the high country of Yellowstone National Park, makes its meandering way through the valley, fed by streams and rivers, such as the Gros Ventre River and Flat Creek. Along the western side of the valley, the famous Teton Mountains rise into the sky, a sharp soaring of rock without the preamble of foothills to separate the massive mountains from the valley floor. Several lakes lie along the base of the range; among them is large Jackson Lake. Grand Teton, the tallest mountain in the range, is 13,772 feet above sea level, towering over Jenny Lake at its base. In the valley to the east, the Gros Ventre (Big Belly) Mountains roll up a little more gently from the valley floor.

Grand Teton National Park occupies most of the valley of Jackson Hole, preserving the towering peaks of the Teton Mountains and the beautiful glacial lakes. The native wildlife includes moose, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, elk, grizzly and black bear, bison, and trumpeter swans. To the delight of the park's visitors, many of the large animals roam undisturbed across the valley floor, and numerous trails lead into the mountains to satisfy adventurers. Today the park includes 485 square miles or 310,000 acres.

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park is a nearly 3,500-sq.-mile wilderness recreation area atop a volcanic hot spot. Mostly in Wyoming, the park spreads into parts of Montana and Idaho too. Yellowstone features dramatic canyons, alpine rivers, lush forests, hot springs and gushing geysers, including its most famous, Old Faithful. It's also home to hundreds of animal species, including bears, wolves, bison, elk and antelope.

Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Grand Teton National Park is in the northwest of the U.S state of Wyoming. It encompasses the Teton mountain range, the 4000-meter Grand Teton peak, and the valley known as Jackson Hole. It’s a popular destination for mountaineering, hiking, backcountry camping and fishing, linked to nearby Yellowstone National Park by the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway.

Viewing The Solar Eclipse 2017, Jackson Hole Wyoming

The most dramatic scenery for this 2017 eclipse can be found in Wyoming. While Yellowstone National Park is just north of totality, Grand Teton National Park is squarely centered in the eclipse path and will surely be a magnet for eclipse observers.

While there are many hotels and campgrounds in this area, they will undoubtedly be inadequate for the onslaught of eclipse tourists drawn to the most majestic mountains in the contiguous 48 United States. And it will indeed be a spectacle! As emphasized on several pages of this website, either a view from a mountain top or a valley view with surrounding mountains will offer another dimension to your eclipse experience, the chance to see the Moon's shadow rushing along the landscape.

An easy way to get to a mountain top for this spectacle will be to ride the Jackson Hole Tram which has a broad ridge on top which can accommodate many eclipse observers. This rarefied location enjoys 2 minutes and 19 seconds of totality. The limiting factor will be the carrying capacity of the tram between its opening and eclipse time. Another fine vantage will be at the top of the Teton Pass Highway between Jackson, Wyoming and Wilson, Idaho with a duration of 2 minutes, 15 seconds.

Fortunately, there are other scenic but lesser visited locations just to the east of Jackson Hole. The Gros Ventre Wilderness and the Wind River Range offer some of the best hiking and backpacking in the United States. An appealing location is the Green River Lakes campground with a view of the eclipsed Sun above a lake and scenic Squaretop Mountain.
